Howard Pawn & Gold guides

Useful answers, without the runaround.

Three practical guides rewritten from our most helpful existing articles.

The fastest way to know whether an item qualifies is to bring it to the shop. This checklist will help you decide whether the trip makes sense.

Jewelry and precious metals

We evaluate gold, silver, diamond and gemstone jewelry, along with eligible gold, silver and platinum coins or bars. Physical damage does not automatically disqualify jewelry because precious-metal content can still have value.

Electronics

Recent laptops, tablets and gaming systems may qualify when they are working, complete and not locked to another owner. Newer models generally have stronger resale demand.

Battery-powered tools

Working tools from recognized brands may qualify. Bring batteries, chargers, cases and accessories when available so the team can evaluate the complete setup.

Before you visit

  • You must be at least 18.
  • Bring valid government-issued identification.
  • You must fully own the item; it cannot be under a payment plan.
  • Remove personal data and account locks from electronics.

Acceptance and value are determined only after an in-store inspection.

Coins, bars and jewelry are not evaluated by appearance alone. Purity, weight, authenticity, condition and current market information all matter.

What to bring

Bring the item, valid government-issued ID and any packaging, certificates or receipts you have. Documentation can help, but the team will still inspect and test the item.

What happens at the counter

Staff may weigh the item, inspect markings and use appropriate testing methods to help identify metal content and authenticity. For jewelry, gemstones and craftsmanship can affect the evaluation as well.

Your choice

If the item qualifies, the shop may offer to buy it or use it as collateral for a pawn loan. Ask questions, review the offer and choose the option that fits you. You are not obligated to proceed.

A pawn loan uses an eligible item you own as collateral. The decision is based on the item rather than a traditional unsecured-credit application.

1. Evaluation

Bring the item and valid government-issued ID. The team evaluates condition, authenticity, completeness and resale demand.

2. Offer and terms

If the item qualifies, staff will explain the available loan amount, charges, due date and other terms. Read the pawn ticket and ask questions before agreeing.

3. Item storage

The shop holds the item as collateral during the loan period. Keep your pawn ticket and make sure the shop has accurate contact information.

4. Repayment or renewal

Follow the terms on your pawn ticket. Eligible customers can use MobilePawn to view account information and manage certain transactions.

This guide is general information. Your pawn ticket and applicable Illinois requirements control the actual transaction.
